  • the four enemies

As I was getting ready to leave, I decided to ask him once more about the enemies of a man of knowledge. I argued that I could not return for some time, and it would be a good idea to write down what he had to say and then think about it while I was away. He hesitated for a while, but then began to talk.

“When a man starts to learn, he is never clear about his objectives. His purpose is faulty; his intent is vague. He hopes for rewards that will never materialize, for he knows nothing of the hardships of learning. “He slowly begins to learn… bit by bit at first, then in big chunks. And his thoughts soon clash. What he learns is never what he pictured, or imagined, and so he begins to be afraid. Learning is never what one expects. Every step of learning is a new task, and the fear the man is experiencing begins to mount mercilessly, unyieldingly. His purpose becomes a battlefield.

“And thus he has tumbled upon the first of his natural enemies: Fear!

A terrible enemy… treacherous, and difficult to overcome. It remains concealed at every turn of the way, prowling… waiting. And if the man, terrified in its presence, runs away, his enemy will have put an end to his quest.”
“What will happen to the man if he runs away in fear?”
“Nothing happens to him except that he will never learn. He will never become a man of knowledge. He will perhaps be a bully or a harmless, scared man; at any rate, he will be a defeated man. His first enemy will have put an end to his cravings.”
“And what can he do to overcome fear?”
“The answer is very simple. He must not run away. He must defy his fear, and in spite of it he must take the next step in learning, and the next, and the next. He must be fully afraid, and yet he must not stop. That is the rule! And a moment will come when his first enemy retreats. The man begins to feel sure of himself. His intent becomes stronger. Learning is no longer a terrifying task. “When this joyful moment comes, the man can say without hesitation that he has defeated his first natural enemy.”

“Does it happen at once, don Juan, or little by little?”
“It happens little by little, and yet the fear is vanquished suddenly and fast.”
“But won’t the man be afraid again if something new happens to him?”
“No. Once a man has vanquished fear, he is free from it for the rest of his life because, instead of fear, he has acquired clarity… a clarity of mind which erases fear. By then a man knows his desires; he knows how to satisfy those desires. He can anticipate the new steps of learning, and a sharp clarity surrounds everything. The man feels that nothing is concealed.

“And thus he has encountered his second enemy: Clarity!

That clarity of mind, which is so hard to obtain, dispels fear, but also blinds. “It forces the man never to doubt himself. It gives him the assurance he can do anything he pleases, for he sees clearly into everything. And he is courageous because he is clear, and he stops at nothing because he is clear. But all that is a mistake; it is like something incomplete. If the man yields to this make-believe power, he has succumbed to his second enemy and will fumble with learning. He will rush when he should be patient, or he will be patient when he should rush. And he will fumble with learning until he winds up incapable of learning anything more.”

“What becomes of a man who is defeated in that way, don Juan? Does he die as a result?”
“No, he doesn’t die. His second enemy has just stopped him cold from trying to become a man of knowledge; instead, the man may turn into a buoyant warrior, or a clown. Yet the clarity for which he has paid so dearly will never change to darkness and fear again. He will be clear as long as he lives, but he will no longer learn, or yearn for, anything.”

“But what does he have to do to avoid being defeated?”
“He must do what he did with fear: he must defy his clarity and use it only to see, and wait patiently and measure carefully before taking new steps; he must think, above all, that his clarity is almost a mistake. And a moment will come when he will understand that his clarity was only a point before his eyes. And thus he will have overcome his second enemy, and will arrive at a position where nothing can harm him any more. This will not be a mistake. It will not be only a point before his eyes. It will be true power. “He will know at this point that the power he has been pursuing for so long is finally his. He can do with it whatever he pleases. His ally is at his command. His wish is the rule. He sees all that is around him.

But he has also come across his third enemy: Power!

“Power is the strongest of all enemies. And naturally the easiest thing to do is to give in; after all, the man is truly invincible. He commands; he begins by taking calculated risks, and ends in making rules, because he is a master. “A man at this stage hardly notices his third enemy closing in on him. And suddenly, without knowing, he will certainly have lost the battle. His enemy will have turned him into a cruel, capricious man.”

    “Will he lose his power?”
“No, he will never lose his clarity or his power.”
“What then will distinguish him from a man of knowledge?”
“A man who is defeated by power dies without really knowing how to handle it. Power is only a burden upon his fate. Such a man has no command over himself, and cannot tell when or how to use his power.”
“Is the defeat by any of these enemies a final defeat?”
“Of course it is final. Once one of these enemies overpowers a man there is nothing he can do.”
“Is it possible, for instance, that the man who is defeated by power may see his error and mend his ways?”
“No. Once a man gives in he is through.”

“But what if he is temporarily blinded by power, and then refuses it?”
“That means his battle is still on. That means he is still trying to become a man of knowledge. A man is defeated only when he no longer tries, and abandons himself.”
“But then, don Juan, it is possible that a man may abandon himself to fear for years, but finally conquer it?”
“No, that is not true. If he gives in to fear he will never conquer it, because he will shy away from learning and never try again. But if he tries to learn for years in the midst of his fear, he will eventually conquer it because he will never have really abandoned himself to it.”

“How can he defeat his third enemy, don Juan?”
“He has to defy it, deliberately. He has to come to realize the power he has seemingly conquered is in reality never his. He must keep himself in line at all times, handling carefully and faithfully all that he has learned. If he can see that clarity and power, without his control over himself, are worse than mistakes, he will reach a point where everything is held in check. He will know then when and how to use his power. And thus he will have defeated his third enemy.

“The man will be, by then, at the end of his journey of learning… and almost without warning he will come upon the last of his enemies: Old age!

This enemy is the cruelest of all, the one he won’t be able to defeat completely, but only fight away. “This is the time when a man has no more fears, no more impatient clarity of mind… a time when all his power is in check, but also the time when he has an unyielding desire to rest. If he gives in totally to his desire to lie down and forget, if he soothes himself in tiredness, he will have lost his last round, and his enemy will cut him down into a feeble old creature. His desire to retreat will overrule all his clarity, his power, and his knowledge.

“But if the man sloughs off his tiredness, and lives his fate through, he can then be called a man of knowledge, if only for the brief moment when he succeeds in fighting off his last, invincible enemy. That moment of clarity, power, and knowledge is enough.”

  • wisdom of our body – kinesiology exercise

wisdom of our body – kinesiology exercise

I’ve encountered this exercise some years ago… don’t remember where. never tried it, so now, as it came my way again, I said I’d give it a try…

    here it is:

The following is an easy and foolproof method to tap into the wisdom of your body. It is an ancient Korean teaching and is a way to get clear yes/no answers that are right for you and your baby [n.a. even if you are not pregnant]. You can learn to trust it withing hours. I have taught it to hundreds of people and everyone can do it. Children love it and it helps them safe by teaching them to rely on their own inner truth instead of their peers.

    • Drink one cup of water
    • Stand up, with your feet spread shoulder width apart, hands at your side.
    • Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to relax and center.
    • Slowly, tell your body inwardly: “Body, give me a yes” and observe inwardly what the body does. It is complete in about 10 seconds.
    • next say “Body, give me a no” and observe what it does.

If you are going to do this, read no further. Do it and then continue reading. What you might have felt were feelings in your gut or throat. These feelings will later be useful to your inner hearing abilities but are harder to start with since they differ from person to person. What is easy and always constant is this: if you could have seen your body, you would have seen it leaning forward for “Yes” and leaning backwards on “No”.

    • Now stand up, close your eyes and do it again. This time you will feel it very obviously.

If you get reversed indications for yes and no, or no reaction at all, drink another glass of water and do it again. Our body’s intuition and wisdom is an electrical impulse that cannot work well when we are dehydrated. Most of us are chronically dehydrated. […] Now say and further test for answers you already know to be true. Stand up and state:

    • “My name is…”, “My name is… (use another name)” test for yes/no
    • ” I am a man/woman” yen/no?
    • “Drinking water water is helps my body” yes/no”
    • “I am pregnant” yes/no? […]

Be sure your question is a simple question and that you only ask only one thing at a time. “It is best to rest or go on a walk?” is too questions. Try instead:

    • “Is it best for my body to rest” yes/no?
    • Is it best to go on a walk? yes/no? […]

Turn a quantity question into specific amounts:

    • “Do I need vitamin C” yes/no,
    • “Is this kind good for me” yes/no,
    • Then state “I want to know how many I need. Do I need one?” […]

When asking a question, center yourself first for a few seconds and clearly think or state a question. Your answers will be your guidance or body wisdom in this moment. Become comfortable with your own body signals of yes/no for a few days. This will develop your trust before moving on to asking questions of your baby’s Spirit guidance [n.a. or any other more, let’s call it profound, subjects] […]

Never be pushed to decide something on the spur of the moment. If you feel rushed, disappear into a bathroom for privacy and test yes/no. Clarity feels good. You will breath deeply. If you are not clear, do nothing. Clarity will come in time. Perhaps a relevant peace of information is needed. If you ask, Spirit will help you access what is needed. Be patient, persist and trust.

Sunni Karll – Sacred Birthing, Birthing a New Humanity – Chapter 14 – Inner Healing: In Touch With Baby & Spirit

I started to try it with really the simplest questions.

I think a center piece of this teaching is the connection with the present moment, with the breath, being inside the body. That creates space for clarity to manifest.

I invite you to play and let me know what you observe. 🙂 I will come back in a few days and weeks to share my experience.

  • reinventing organizations

    reinventing organizations

“there’s something broken with the way we run organizations today.”

This is how Frederic Laloux starts this talk on Reinventing Organizations.

these were the reasons I left organizations. too much control from the top management, plans with no meaningful purpose, managers not walking the talk etc, no inspiring or empowering leaders, people loosing their light on the way, no passion from management.

in the beginning of 2015 I’ve decided I will not work in business organizations again, at least in the type of ones I worked in or the types I worked with or heard of, that includes all multinationals I know around in Romania.

Laloux has been doing a three year study which reveals some of the aspects I’m trying to implement in all my… so called work / career.. which is so part of my life :).

He says that the new emerging organizational management paradigm which seams to work and have tremendous results (also in numbers!) implement the following elements:

    1. self-management: in which, for example, decision making processes are not hierarchical nor consensus but implemented as an advice process, where everyone in the organization can make a decision based on consulting with a more experience person in the areas of decision and also with someone who will be directly affected by that decision.
    2. wholeness: which main focus is to create a safe space for people to work in and includes practices like feedback & evaluations, storytelling, compensations & incentives, on-boarding, office-space, conflict resolutions, recruitment, dismissal.
    3. evolutionary purpose: leaders are listening to where the organization wants naturally called to go and facilitate that way.

most of the organizations included in his research have no budgets, no targets, no sales targets. 🙂 sounds crazy for some, eh? 🙂

    here is the entire talk:

I dedicate this talk with reverence and deep appreciation for all the experiences we’ve shared together with Calin E, Dumitru R, Dragos P and Calin F, along the way.

these experiences had brought me to where I am today – doing what I love, involving in projects I feel passionate about, meeting people with similar interests and meaningful purposes. 🙂 <3

  • unspoken: no words

    unspoken: no words

    words…
    what are they?….
    who are they?…
you sleep… it’s me who needs to speak out somehow… and it’s good that I am here… with you

    would you forgive me,
if, again, I will not let you sleep with my speaking?

    words…
wondering hou would it be to have a smooth relationship with them
other that…using them… It feels impersonal
relationship.. which is NOT… feels like
dry words… and yet they are born of me
like own children which you don’t recognize as yours
does that mean I am… dry?

    …here I go again… [judging myself also]
there is something inside of me which feel so UNSPOKEN
    what is IT?
    feels disconnected
feels… like so close and yet so far
like a blind spot you know is there but you cannot see
a blackhole which sucks my energy, attention…. and I cannot get close to it

yet these creatures…words… are creating the bridge between myself and the world
….and you, you, you, you… and all my significant others.
is in this context I feel these creatures are not with me… are going away from me
    running away
and I have this sense of… missing the vehicle to relate… to construct…
yet when I am with no words (in fact when I am not with words)… I am with…. feel(ing)s.
which for me are enough… are they, really?! sometimes I know they are, I know it inside…
    and there are times I feel… like… without hands… eyes…. tongue… mouth…

abyss between me and the world
feeling like talking about… nothing here, again… see?! no words at hand… at least not specific ones…

    my mind is unclear now…

    going to find sleep now

    cereale libere

    Dragi prieteni ai Pamantului Liber,

De ceva vreme facem painea noastra, acasa.

Zilele acestea am pornit si maia-ua noastra proprie…

Ne intereseaza totul: grau, alac (spelta), hrisca, mei, orez, secara, orz, ovaz, porumb, sorg…

  • Mar adentro… poem of Ramon Sampedro

    Mar Adentro

    Mar adentro,
    mar adentro.

Y en la ingravidez del fondo
    donde se cumplen los sueños
    se juntan dos voluntades
    para cumplir un deseo.

    Un beso enciende la vida
con un relámpago y un trueno
    y en una metamorfosis
mi cuerpo no es ya mi cuerpo,
es como penetrar al centro del universo.

    El abrazo más pueril
y el más puro de los besos
    hasta vernos reducidos
    en un único deseo.

    Tu mirada y mi mirada
como un eco repitiendo, sin palabras
    ‘más adentro’, ‘más adentro’
hasta el más allá del todo
por la sangre y por los huesos.

    Pero me despierto siempre
    y siempre quiero estar muerto,
    para seguir con mi boca
    enredada en tus cabellos.

    See inside

    The sea inside,
    The sea inside.

In the weightlessness of the bottom
    Where dreams come true
    Two wills unite
    To realize a desire.

    Your gaze and my gaze
Like an echo repeating without words
    Further inside, further inside.
Until beyond the realm of everything
    Beyond blood and beyond bones.

    But I always wake
And I always wish I’d be dead,
    To stay with my mouth
    Entangled within your hair.

    A movie to see…

  • “Why are you taking this course?”

“Why are you taking this course?”

On 8th of March I enrolled in the “Space Between Stories” online “course” with Charles Eisenstein, his invites and people around the world.

In enrollment, he was asking us to answer the “Why are you taking this course?“question from four perspectives. Here are my answers for today…

    1. Answer as if speaking to an acquaintance or relative who might be uncomfortable with the changes you are facing or have been through.
I’m embarking in this (let’s call it) course so that I can better understand my “changes”, my deeper wanting of being myself and connecting in quality with the precious spirits around me (myself, you, people in my life, Mother Earth, all beings in the Universe etc.).

    2. Answer as if speaking to a trusted counselor, an ally on your evolutionary journey.
I’m taking this course because you know I feel this inner calling which drives me to living a simpler, closer to nature life, calling me for changes I want for a long time (and refuse to hear it for a long time). Thank you for bringing Charles and his vision into my life – as you’re holding my hand and knowing Charles (and people like you two) gives me hope for ourselves, for humanity, empowers me, gives me strength and purpose to keep co-creating the small changes that drive to bigger impact on our in-need-for-ourselves world.

    3. Answer as if speaking to your future self on his or her deathbed.
You know I don’t want us to get to that moment of you telling me “I wish you’d had the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life others expected of you”. I walk and co-create now the new stories, the story of my own self, with courage, trust and kindness, stories for the most beautiful world my and our hearts know to be(come) possible .

    4. Answer as if speaking to Gaia, the living planet; to the totality of all life on earth.
Dear Mother, I feel you calling me back to you as I haven’t listened to your call for a long time. I pushed back, I ran away from you and myself and lately as I / we cared less, your call is stronger then ever. I feel it, I see it and it’s time for us to be one again: I am taking this endeavor to get ready. I know I am ready! And it’s such a privilege to come together with other precious spirits in co-creating the new stories. The stories that take care of me, us, oneness, you and all the beings around. We are (be)coming back, Mother, and we are ready!

  • Fernando: 60 things I learned by living in Romania

Fernando (Brazilian) arrived in Romania by bike from Lithuania, on 1st of September 2013.

I met Fernando shortly in a BoA meeting of AIESEC Tg. Mures. His eyes were shimmering gates to his shining-colorful soul, even if he covers that with some fancy-trendy-fashionable-professional-like eye-glasses.

Below is his today post on Facebook – what I was noticing  in his words was that he got most of Romania and Romanian in a relative short period.

To cut it short, here below is his perception. (I have his “yes” for re-posting it here, thank you Fernando!)

Exactly 1 month ago I was arriving in Brazil. So here it goes: 60 things I learned by living in Romania!

PS: Pay attention to what down here is a joke and what is not.

    Check it out! 🙂

1- Dracula is a vampire outside Romania.

2- The same dude, Vlad Tepes, is a national hero.

3 – While vampires drink blood, the real red thing I loved to drink was Visinata.

4 – Another devilish drink is Tuica, Hungarians call it palinka, but it is the same thing.

5 – Most moldavians (east part of Romania), muntenians (na. south part of Romania) and others have no idea what happens with Hungarians in Ardeal (na. Transylvania region)

6 – Romanians smoke an absurd amount of cigarettes. They smoke inside their houses, restaurants, and even shopping malls.

7 – Romanians always take of their shoes when entering home

8 – I believe Romanians prefer to keep their floor clean rather than their lungs.

9 – Traveling in Romania is one of the best memories I have. Rivers, canyons, hills, mountains… They have it all.

10 – While traveling in Romania you will go through Romanian roads. They are in good condition, but they have an absurd amount of curves.

11 – Also when traveling in Romania, you might want to pee. But worry not; there are so many houses by the side of the roads that it’s easier to end up in a bathroom than behind some bushes.

12 – Maramures is a happy place. Happy people, happy costumes, happy colors, even happy cemetery.

13 – The only thing that isn’t happy in Maramures are shepherd dogs. They are not happy. They don’t like you. Run.

14 – In fact, unless you are inside a city, whenever you see a dog in Romania, run.

15 – Another tactic is to always carry mici with you. As I’m vegetarian, I wouldn’t mind giving mici to dogs.

16 – As a matter of fact, as a vegetarian in Romanian I can definitely say: Romanians love meat

17 – Sarmale, tocanita, slanina, carnati… you have it all, meat eaters.

18 – Romanians have soup every single day of their lives.

19 – Taxis in Romania are ridiculously cheap. In Bucharest they can cost as low as 1,29 per km.

20 – Another extremely easy way to go around is Hitchhiking. Romanians do it, and give it in return.

21 – Romanians also expect you to pay for giving you a ride. You can, of course say “nu am bani” before hopping in, but you can get a frustrated driver to shout “INCHIDE USA” at your sorry moneyless face. (true story)

22 – My favorite mean of transportation though was by inter-regio train. They are cheap, comfortable, on time and often not crowded.

23 – However, you can end up inside a 12 hours train trip from Suceava to Mures back from New Year’s holiday. Then you will know what “crowded” really means. (true story)

    24 – Romanians love skiing.

25 – Skiing in Romania is absurdly cheap.

26 – It took me 3 full days to be taught how to ski. Skiing is not for Brazilians or tropical countries inhabitants.

27 – Once you learn, though, you will love it and open another door to my favorite part of Romania: Mountains.

28 – Romania has the most beautiful scenarios I’ve seen so far in my life. All of them from mountain tops.

29 – Romanian mountains have incredibly well signed paths for hikers, cabanas for travelers to stay overnight and places for the more audacious to camp.

30 – By now you should have guessed that doing such a trip will be absurdly cheap.

31 – Interesting though is that many Romanians have never been to such mountains.

32 – Even more interesting is that Romanians will often overestimate some rather average places (e.g. Mamaia or Bucovina Monasteries) and underestimate awesome places (e.g. Bucharest).

33 – Bucharest is a great city. Sure it has no such architecture as Budapest, Krakow or other eastern European cities, but it has the museums, parks and nightlife that few others have

34 – People say there are many stray dogs in Bucharest.

35 – I had more dogs chasing me in any given day by bike that I had during a week in Bucharest.

36 – Truly, I didn’t see stray dogs in Bucharest.

37 – Romanian language is beautiful. It sounds beautiful and is achievable for Brazilians to learn

38 – “Cu carne de vaca nu se moare de foame”…. And my Google chrome translator thought I was writing in Portuguese.

39 – However, the most obscure part or Romanian language is Dativ.

    40 – AHHHHHH DAAAATIIIIV!!!!

    41 – You can say “mi-e foame” “mi-e sete” “mi-e somn”….. but you can’t say “mi-e oboseala”.

    42 – AAAAHHH DATIIIIIV!!!!

43 – Romanians talk with their shoulders. Observe it! When someone says “pai, nu stiu…”.

44 – Follow the same exercise mentioned above and observe their mouths and the chin.

45 – Hungarians won’t admit, but they have THE Romanian accent. The way of saying “nu stiu” is the same of saying “nem tudom”.

46 – My preferred way of practicing Romanian is with drivers that have me a ride by the road.

47 – They would often say what the hell am I doing in such a country if am Brazilian.

48 – These drivers didn’t know that Romanian healthcare system is great, it has a lower murder rate than Norway and is the fastest growing economy from eastern European countries.

49 – Generally Romanians complain about Romania. They will find a way to complain about it. Politics, economy, society…

    50 – They are wrong.

51 – I learned what 4 seasons mean: Hot summers, cool autumns, cold winters and fresh springs.

52 – Romania has all the 4 seasons with two huge advantages from northern countries: In winters they have sun. In summer it’s not cloudy.

53 – Romania has a nice wildlife: Dears can be seen frequently, black goats can be seen on occasion (been there done that), bears and wolves are invisible.

54 – The closest we’ve been to a bear was its footprints

55 – Romanians are Latin in language, but not as Latin in blood.

56 – When you enter an office, you have to shake hands with the men but you just wave to the women.

57 – Romanians expected that me as a Brazilian would play football really well… Terrible mistake.

58 – For months after the world cup I would hear “so, do you like Germany” from people. Go to hell…

59 – Most Romanians at their 18’s have two dreams in mind: 1 – Moving to the UK. 2- Moving to any other country that isn’t Romania.

60 – While Romanians dream to leave, I dream once I will come back.

    Thank you, Fernando!
